Keyword research is an important step that all internet marketers and niche marketers must take in order to figure out exactly how to choose a product to promote or a niche to promote based on potential and competition. First off, highly competitive topics such as weight loss, health and money making online are extremely difficult to get started in at this point unless one is highly specific with their keyword.
Get started by utilizing a keyword tool, the most popular free tool is the Overture Keyword Tool which is located at http://inventory.overture.com. Type in a keyword to begin, like “cooking,” then press enter and you should see a variety of keywords on the left and a numeral value to the right. The numeral value indicated the amount of average searches in a month on yahoo. This number is not 100% accurate but provides a nice starting point for making a decision.
In most cases, the higher the search number the more competitive that topic is. The number one rule is not to target a single word ever as far as your site or product’s topic. Scroll down the list to see long keyword phrases that are composed of three or more words and type those into google to see how many search results a phrase yields. There’s no magic number you just sort of feel it out but if it is under 1,000,000 you may be able to run a highly successful website based off of that keyword phrase.
Something else to keep in mind is that Overture jumbles up keyword phrases into random order so make sure to rearrange the keyword phrase so that it makes sense. For example, on overture you may see “for cooking Italian idiots” which of course would rearrange to “Italian cooking for idiots.”
Now that we have a solid foundation, let us move on how to apply the basic understanding of keyword research to actually making a decision, how to optimize and put the selected keyword to use.
