Part of Web Analytics is computation, investigation, and the compilation of data for the enhancement of a web site. With Analytics, there are two categories – Onsite and Offsite Web Analytics.
•	Onsite Web Analytics: Refers to the measurement of the end user’s tour of the website. This method of analysis computes the performance of the website based on a profitable framework. Data collected when the user is on the site is tracked and charted. After many users are on the site, trends appear – and changes can be made to the site to funnel the stream of users in a direction.

•	Offsite Web Analytics: Can be used to measure how a site’s competition is doing, the number of links directing users to the site. Offsite Web Analytics also plays a large role in advertising. How much a website should spend on advertising can vary depending on how much traffic the advertising is bringing in.

For many years Web Analytics was primarily considered the study and engineering of Onsite statistics. These days there are SEO professionals who produce tools which cover both the groupings.
Web Analytics Approaches

Tribulation through cookies: Until recently, SEO professionals have used several forms of cookie tracking. This presents a privacy issue. Many users are becoming more informed about their privacy on the web, and do not want 3rd party sites tracking their cookies. Understandably, many users do not want someone knowing all of the sites that they visit, so they choose to block the 3rd party cookie trackers. Web sites that want to stay ahead of this problem can opt to not use a 3rd party cookie tracker that shares it’s information across many websites. Another problem is when users delete their cookies. Thus rendering cross-site cookie tracking less credible. As more user block cross-site cookie tracking, it is becoming less-useful of a tool.

Exclusive landing pages
Having unique landing pages is an accurate way to track the activity for two categories. When used in advertising; two unique landing pages for two separate ads can show which ad performs better than the other. Another excellent use for unique landing pages is to have half of your user base split between two homepages. Changes can be made to one to see if those changes increase traffic, sales, or sign-ups.

Secure diagnostic metering
The two Web Analytic approaches mentioned above are imprecise and insecure methods with the vital issues of being susceptible to exploitation. These issues are dealt with time and again on paper, but have never been employed and as such, they are retained because of the engineering communities’ deficiency of interest or possibly due to the profits from the present circumstances to the website owners. The alternative is for web developers to stop focusing on what other sites users travel to, and increasing the efforts to streamline their own site. SEO Suites that give this information without tracking the user across many sites will become more powerful as users become more privacy conscious. Unique landing pages create the problem of being time consuming and ineffective over time. While an excellent sales pitch – SEO engineers know that it is snake oil.

When it comes to your Meta tags you want them to contain key information about your website as well as your top keywords. Make sure they keywords are in the title as well as in the body of the text. Make sure you write a description about your page using specific information and keywords, but keep it short and sweet. All your keywords should always be relevant to the content within the page they describe. With the title tag, each search engine looks at it and uses it primarily the same way, to summarize and compile the websites contents for its search engine users. The how and where your keywords are in your title tag are the most important element with to which you can get benefit from using title tag. Choosing keywords is an essential part of producing a successful website.

When creating the title for the website makes sure you include keywords in the title that are on the page. There has been a lot of talk about title tags about how they are not important anymore, but in reality they are still important. On your page to properly place your title tag you should put it between the HEAD tags, one of the best place to include it is right after the HEAD tag. Most of the SE use the meta title as the title of the page. When you do a search on search engines the title that is listed is the title on the website and sometime the Meta title is used. Once you understand why the title is so important, you can easily write more effective title tags. The title is so important because the first thing that a human searcher sees is the title. The Meta title is a critical factor in controlling where your site is listed in search engines.

In many results the Meta description will appear on the results page right under the title. The only caveat to remember is that your META description will only show if the search term is in the META description. Try to keep the title brief so it is not cut off in the results, it is best practice if you keep the description under 200 characters.. Your description contains your important key phrase and key words. Place your description in the opening paragraph, if you do this the description is weighted heavier by search engines. Sometimes even google picks up description tag. Make sure that title and description is crafted neatly and attracts both visitors and search engines.

Bots have been spidering the web since the ’90’s, including pages into various collections. Pictures are worth 1000 words to you and me, but zero to a search engine. Even if you ensure you have completely relevant Meta Tags, some search engines will still ignore them. Always make sure that your meta tags do not have any line breaks. The more educated you are about what search engines are looking for, the better you will be able to respond and rise in the rankings.

If you only put the description in the Meta tag section, then the search engine robots will see it but many of your visitors will not. Don’t hide this information in a place where your readers cannot see it. Meta tags are HTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a web page. Using Meta tags is not some magic answer that everyone thinks it is. Meta Tags are most commonly used to distinguish the keywords that are relevant to a page’s content. The robots do scan the Meta tags and some of the search engines will use the information from them. Meta tags are still important today, they might not be as important but you still need to use them if you want to compete with other sites.

There are many occasions when you wish to display your URL in the form yourdomain/display.html but would like, instead, to direct visitors to another URL, say some-other-domain/best-mouse-trap.html.

For example, you are promoting an affiliate program with URL your-merchant-URL/sales-page/your-affiliate-code, and you think that the URL is too long, or you want to hide the fact that it is an affiliate link, or you want to prevent people from stealing your affiliate commission, you could use this technique. You could even check how many people have clicked on your affiliate link, by checking the number of clicks of the displayed URL before it is redirected, from your Web site log.

Here is another example. You are using a tracking software, or a tracking company, to track your advertisement. Usually, the tracking URL will be of the form your-tracking-URL/…/tracking-?blah-blah or tracking-company-URL/…/tracking-?blah-blah. You want to use your own domain name or you do not want others know that you are tracking the ad. You could use the URL your-URL/your-sales-description which redirects visitors to the tracking URL.

Knowledge of technique of redirecting URL will give you a lot of, among other benefits, flexibility. Here is how to do it with META tag…

Create the page, “display.html,” with the following META tag between the HEAD and /HEAD tags in the HTML codes…

META http-equiv = “refresh” content = “0; URL = some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html” without any other content (if you wish, you could include the title “World’s Best Mouse Trap” between the TITLE and /TITLE tags, to show that this page is about mouse trap).

Upload the page “display.html” to the root directory of your Web site. With that, when visitors click on the link your-URL/display.html, they will be redirected to some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html.

Please note that for the URL some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html in the above META tag, and other URLs through out the rest of the article, you should include the “http” protocol which have been omitted.

The following variation of the above method will give you a neater way of displaying your URL, namely, without using the “.html” extension in your displayed URL…

First create a sub-directory, say “best-mouse-trap” in the root directory at your Web site. Instead of naming the Web page created above as display.html, name it as index.html.

Upload this “index.html” file into the sub-directory “best-mouse-trap”. Then, when your visitors click on the URL your-URL/best-mouse-trap they will be redirected to some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html.

While meta tag optimization is not quite so important these days in terms of helping you achieve or help in your search engine rankings I still do believe that you should keep optimizing you pages on your web site in the same manner that we have learned in the past.

There certainly aren’t any indicators in the way that Google views your websites which would penalize you for still utilizing and this optimization method. The meta description tag still carries quite a lot of merit and of course as always we have to keep doing in depth keyword research to give us the competing edge when it comes to attracting targeted website traffic and finding out which market you can compete in without masses of competition.

With that being said, we cannot forget about the importance these days of LSI and SILO structure websites. This is most important in my mind. But, I’m just going to give some quick tips in meta tag optimization and some quick tips for the purpose of this article.

1. Always use your main targeted keyword or keyword phrase for the title of your page.

This alone is one very important and crucial step when trying to place high in the

engines for a particular page and keyword phrase.

2. Use your main targeted keyword or phrase in the title of the text on your page.

this is different from the statement above, even though it may sound like I’m saying

the same thing. In this part we are not actually calling the page the targeted keyword

or phrase rather I am just talking about the title of your pages first article.

Place this title inside H1 tags on your page.

3. Use your secondary targeted keyword or phrase in the subtitle of your pages article or

text. Place this subtitle in H2 tags on your web page.

4. Inside the description meta tag of your webpage use a keyword rich sentence or two

containing your main targeted keyword or phrase in this description. Try to make

this a good interesting description because this will show up in search results and

you want to entice the reader to click through to your web page or website.

5. Even though the keyword tag doesn’t have as much importance these days I suggest to

continue to use it. Of course within this tag include your main targeted and secondarily

target keywords and phrases will be placed.

6. Use your main keywords or keyword phrase in the opening paragraphs of your web

page, somewhere throughout the body of your webpage, and always try to have it

included somewhere in the closing of the article of you web page. This will help to

keep the theme of your web page in check.

This was just a quick short rundown of a few tips in meta tag optimization. There is much more involved with good SEO and tips in how to improve search engine ranking.

Meta Tags are the HTML tags that sit in the Head of a HTML document. There are a number of different tags but to be honest there are really only three tags that we need to worry about when building webpages.

In the last few years, Meta Tags have really taken a hammering as Search Engine marketeers used Meta Tags to cram in as many Keywords as possible to influence their rankings. With this came a Search Engine backlash and they stopped using them as part of their Search Algorhythm – or at least that is what they have said. Maybe they did or maybe they didn’t. What we are seeing though is that they are being used as part of determing what your webpages are about. So lets look at our three Tags….

The Title Tag, The keyword Tag and the Description Tag.

The Title Tag

The Title Tag is the only Tag out of the three that you actually “see”. The content of the Title Tag appears in the blue bar along the top of your browser.

It also usually appears as the clickable title in the Search Engine results. Of the three Tags, the Title Tag holds the most power.

It is essential that when writing a title for a webpage that you use the Keywords you wish to focus that page on as near to the beginning as possible.

Also as important is to make sure you have different titles for each page of your site.

The Title Tag sits normally right at the top of the HTML code and is sat inside HTML containers “title”

The Keyword Tag

The Meta Keyword tag is the most abused and misunderstood Tag of all time. Webmasters would cram these full of Keywords in the hope that they would rank for them, even if the Keyword they put in their Tag was not even on the page of content.

Make sure that all the Keywords you add to the Meta Keyword Tags are on the page. Make sure you include plurals of these Keywords too, but only if they are on the page of content.

Keep them fairly short – if your webpage only has three or four keywords on it, then just add these to your Keyword Tags. There is no rule that says you have to fill it up with junk.

The format for a Keyword Meta Tag is meta name=”keywords” content=”enter your keywords here separated by commas”

The Description Tag

Again, the Description Tag is fairly misunderstood in that lots of people claim it doesn’t get used by any of the Search Engines and that it is a waste of time.

Recently Vanessa Fox, product manager for the Google webmaster tools, has confirmed that unique Meta Description Tags for each web page help Google determine the uniqueness of a web page. The Meta Description Tags are used to create the text snippets that are displayed in Google search results underneath the page heading.

She says: “Looking at your site in the search results, it appears that your pages would be well served by Meta Description Tags. For most queries, the generated snippet is based on where the query terms are found on the page, and in those cases, your results are fine. But for some more generic queries,
where a logical snippet isn’t found in the text, the generated snippet seems to be coming from the first bits of text from the page – in this case, boilerplate navigation that is the same for every page.”

While this is just Google, your Meta Description can be used by other Search Engines and Web Directories to describe your site when it appears in Search Engine Rankings.

The correct format for a Description Meta Tag is meta name=”description” content=”Enter your Description here. Try and keep your major Keywords near the front of this description.”

In conclusion

The three tags described above play a large part in your on-page Search Engine optimisation strategies. Get these right and you could be winging your way up the rankings without any outside influence from link building or other time consuming techniques. At the same token, get it wrong, you could be penalised.

If you are pulling your hair out trying to figure out ways of getting your site listed higher in Google or the other Search Engines, then maybe it is time to revisit your webcode. Make sure you have unique Titles Keywords and descriptions on every page of your site. Get these changed then sit back and watch what happens.

Remember, your pages are also not carved out of stone, you can amend then make changes and rework your Tags to see what effect they have on your rankings.

The Search Engines love to see constantly evolving pages so simply testing your Tags will help you.

Last tip : When all else fails remember – Search Engines see webpages not websites. Treat each page of your site as a separate and unique entity.

Meta Tag optimization services usually focus on three out of many dissimilar Meta tag options. These three are the title Meta tag, Meta description and Meta keywords. Search engines look for these three Meta tags as one of the basis in ranking the website or web pages.

However, Meta keywords are not relevant for some search engines because some website owners stuff their web pages with hidden or repetitive keywords. This is called keyword stuffing and may be a cause for the search engines to ban a web page or website forever.

The main goal of Meta tag optimization services is to optimize the Meta tags according to the algorithms of search engines. They usually require a website or page to have these Meta tags in order for them to sort out the right web page to display on the results page of an internet user,s search.

The Meta title tag must be composing of 5-8 words or not more than 75 characters. Meta tag optimization services are giving special attention to this Meta tag because the search engines commonly sort out the title first, plus its relevance to the content and if the keyword is incorporated within the title. The positioning of keywords in the title tag is also important for search engine ranking.

The Meta description is all about the summary of the web page,s content. The best Meta tag optimization services provide an accurate and interesting Meta description in a web page for the website client they are handling. The Meta description must be powerful enough to encourage the internet users to click on a particular web page because this Meta tag appears on the search results of a search engine.

Meta keyword was one of the most important keys in determining the relevancy of a web page. That was a long time ago when the search engines have not yet realized that some unethical companies are stuffing their website and pages with hidden keywords or placing keywords repeatedly.

Now, only a few of the search engines are still including Meta keywords in their ranking rules. So Meta tag optimization services also give importance for this Meta tag but only a little.

Meta tag optimization is not the only answer to have a higher ranking to search engines. There are a lot of factors to be considered in these rankings. But it is advisable that you have to apply Meta tag optimization services to your web site so that you can explore the possibilities given by it.

“It is a custom. More honored in the breach than the observance.”
Hamlet

Our company has just brought aboard a healthcare client who needs, among other things, a brand new website. Currently, if you Google the name of the company, you will get the following:

Company Name
Free web site templates to jump start your new web site.
http://www.companyname.com- Cached – Similar pages

Whoever created the company’s current website (using a free website template) wasn’t skilled enough to replace or remove the template’s meta description tag. As a result, whenever our client’s website appears in search engine results, no matter the query, this unfortunate text snippet appears. In addition to the very obvious negative branding implications, a typical searcher would be extremely unlikely to click on their site when alternative sites map better to the search request.

What is a Meta Description Tag?

Jill Whalen in an article about this very topic gives an excellent concise definition:

“The Meta description tag is a snippet of HTML code that belongs inside the < Head > < /Head > section of a Web page. It usually is placed after the Title tag and before the Meta keywords tag, although the order is not important.

The proper syntax for this HTML tag is: ‹ META NAME=“Description” CONTENT=“Your descriptive sentence or two goes here.” >”

The theory behind Meta Description tags is reasonably sound…control the snippet of text that is shown when your website page appears in the search engines. However, there are serious drawbacks to its use.

Why Using Meta Description Tags Is Usually A Mistake

More often than not, the decision to use a meta description tag and what to say with it is made between the website designer & the client well before an SEO becomes involved with a website. There are significant marketing implications to the choice of wording and your designer isn’t often the person to best advise you here.

What website owners fail to realize is that their meta description tag will often appear no matter the search query. If the query doesn’t map to the tag, the website will be at a significant disadvantage at being chosen by the searcher. Frequently, the problem is compounded by using the same tag on every single page regardless of content. Also, description tags, like all meta tags, are worthless for improving search engine rankings.

Compared to text snippets supplied by the search engines (which I believe are usually excellent representations of the page content), the novice webmaster is better off skipping the meta description tag entirely.

If You Feel You Need To Use Meta Description Tags, Here Are A Few Rules:

Do not use the same tag on every page.

Keep the tag short…the search engines will truncate it.

Describe the page content…don’t give your USP or generic business description.

Try to project the top 1-3 search engine keywords on the page and make sure to include them in the tag.

Realize that if the search query doesn’t map closely to the tag, your website is far less likely to be chosen by a searcher.

META tags don’t matter.

META tags aren’t a magic SEO solution.

META tags help determine how you rank in Google.

META tags can affect the volume of incoming traffic to your website.

You need META tags on every page of your website.

You don’t META tags on any page of your website but the main page.

Confused yet? Depending upon what you read about search engine optimization, META tags are either the be-all, end-all of good SEO practices, or an irrelevant exercise overshadowed by more important things, namely site content and link popularity. Over the years, the question of META tags has been discussed and debated by people in the SEO game, and in some cases sites have been taken to task to using certain words in META data not appropriate for the site’s material. Whatever you choose to believe about META and such HTML tags, let it be clear that if you are going to implement such code on your site, it is best to do so correctly and in a way that will enhance rather than harm your site.

A quick survey of META tags

When one thinks of META tags, more than likely two types come to mind. In actuality, there are a number of META tags that may be applied to the code of a webpage. The more popular ones include:

KEYWORDS – A repository for placing keywords relevant to the website in one place, to allow search engines to find and therefore cache the site appropriately

DESCRIPTION – Working on the same principal of the KEYWORD tag, the DESCRIPTION tag allows the website owner to summarize the purpose of the site

ROBOTS – This tag gives instruction to the search engine spiders that visit the site, either allowing or forbidding them to cache the information on the page

COPYRIGHT – Affirms the ownership of the site, handy if copyrighted material is used

GENERATOR – Confirms the type of publishing tool used to create the page. HTML editors like Dreamweaver or FrontPage may automatically insert this tag when a new page is created

REVISIT – Instructs search engine spiders to visit the site at specific intervals, handy if you update often, though the validity of this tag has been debated

DESCRIPTION

For the website owner who wishes to keep specific information properly indexed, META tags can prove useful in that respect. From an SEO standpoint, it is argued that the most important of these tags is the DESCRIPTION tag, more so than KEYWORDS and ROBOTS. Among the major search engines, often the data used in the META DESCRIPTION tag is used as the site’s description in search results.

Therefore, it is important to make sure that the content of this tag provides enough information in so many words to entice visitors to click-through. As search engines may truncate descriptions after so many characters or words, it is important to use this tag for a descriptive site summary without being too wordy.

Authors, in particular those with multiple books, may wish to use the DESCRIPTION tag to summarize the site in its entirety. Elements in the tag should definitely include name, the primary genre written, and what incentives the site offers – not just the books.

EXAMPLE ONE: Browse Jane Doe’s site of award-winning mystery novels for sample chapters of her latest works, her personal writing diary, and a chance to win a free signed book.

EXAMPLE TWO: Mary Roe writes engaging historical romance. Read sample chapters of To Marry a Thief, her latest in the Regency London series, and sign up for Jane’s free newsletter for contest and release information.

In the above samples the META description defines the purpose of each website. Each specifies the author and genre and offers calls to action – one to enter a free book giveaway and the other to opt-into a free newsletter with the promise of contest wins. Both emphasize the reading samples on the site, allowing visitors to try before they buy. In just two short sentences, the entire scope of each site is outlined, and this is what the search engines will pick up as they cache the site for further information.

Bottom line, be concise in your description tag and offer incentive for a user to click-through to your site.

KEYWORDS

The debate over whether or not META keywords are important may rage for years to come. In the early days of SEO it was common practice to use this tag to repeat main keywords ad nauseam or “stuff” the tag with popular search phrases unrelated to the site’s topic. As expected, search engines have become wise to such black hat practices and may even penalize a site for trying underhanded tricks to get top results. These days, SEO experts may advise novice webmasters to focus more on META description, site content, and organic inbound linking. At best, META keywords may serve as a guide for search engines to the the focus of your site.

Should you choose to use this tag, choose keywords that are most relevant to your site and content. The mystery author may use his/her name as a search point and other relevant terms: mystery novels, mystery books, mystery fiction, thrillers, detective stories, virginia authors, murder mysteries, and so forth. There is no set rule for minimum and maximum word counts in this tag – some websites rank high with three words in the META keyword tag, while others with 100 words may not do as well, and vice versa. Quality always trumps quantity where this tag is concerned.

Bottom line: relevance is key, but don’t spend too much time on this tag. Save your energy for building a concise, user-friendly website. Once you have crafted the HTML code of your site, make sure what you have to offer visitors is relevant and useful, informative enough to inspire organic linkbacks. A good SEO balance can help bring the traffic, and sales.

Meta tags are not a magic solution. Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag. Meta tags are contained in the HEAD section near the top of the page. Meta tags are HTML tags that help you control how some search engines may index your site, by using the keywords and descriptions you provide. A good question to ask is if meta tags are still necessary. Meta tags are useful in getting better listings in the search engines. The title, keyword and description meta tags are standard HTML tags and should be placed within the HEAD section of a Web page.

Some believe that HTML meta tags will bring you to the top of the search engine rankings. Many vendors of software that generates HTML will make use of their own custom Meta Tags to identify different pieces of information about the document. You can define your own search fields with HTML meta tags. While many search engines are placing more and more emphasis on the keywords used on your actual HTML page, some are still looking at your meta tags.

Everyone knows that to obtain high search engine rankings all you have to do is put the keywords that you want to rank high with into your meta tags, right. You know that keywords should go into your HTML title and meta tags, but did you know that you also need to place them in heading tags. The description meta tag explains your site’s content and data, giving the search engines’ robots and spiders a brief summary of your site. Use the keywords in the META tags in your ALT image description for a boost in some search engines. Being specific and accurate are the ingredients to success with keywords. At the present time, most search services extract keywords from the page text, but some services may use the keywords meta tag. It’s important not to repeat words in the description or keywords meta tags; Meta is not the only way to have your site seen by search engines. Keywords may be separated by a space or a comma or a comma followed by a space. Never, repeat the same word over and over in any single one of those places.

The meta description tag describes your site’s content, giving search engines’ spiders an accurate summary filled with multiple keywords. In search engine listings you see a title and a short description. Titles and Description tags are the most important meta-tags that search engines consider to determine relevancy. Try to always include your keywords within the description tags, if you can put the keywords near the beginning of the meta tag. We recommend keeping your description tag to 170 characters or less. Some services obtain descriptions from the text of the page, while other services use descriptions given in description meta tags. Just a few years ago, good META description and keyword tags were a ticket to success for many sites and many spammers. The Keyword and Description Meta Tags are the two principle META tags that search engines look for when indexing your website. The keyword, title, description tags, have been abused by many seo gurus, because of this many search engines do not pay attention to the meta tags.

Meta tags are used to provide structured data about data, similar in many ways to the information provided in traditional library catalogue records. Meta Tags are most commonly used to distinguish the keywords that are relevant to a page’s content. The robots meta tags are used and respected by all major search engine robots. META Tags are still important today.

For years, people slaved over the meta title and description for each page of their site. Search engines have devalued this approach in relation to rankings, but these two factors are still important.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, let’s quickly cover meta titles and descriptions. You should have both in the code of every page of your site that you want to draw traffic. The meta title is simply the title of the page and appears at the very top right of your computer screen, up above the toolbar of the browser you are using. The meta description is embedded in your code and not seen on the site per se.

A few years back, your meta description and title were critical to gaining rankings. Keyword density analysis within each was a much discussed subject, as was the exact number of times said keywords should appear and where. To a great extent, this is no longer the case. The search engines, particularly Google, started focusing more on the content on the page in relation to establishing rankings.

Meta titles and descriptions may be less important, but they are still vital. Critical might be to strong a word, but very important probably still applies. Why? Well, the play a role in rankings, but also in your click through rate.

When you look at results on Google for a search, the meta title represents your best opportunity to entice a viewer and get them to click into your site. While being ranked number one is obviously a good idea, people are becoming pickier about what they will click through on. Stacking six or seven keyword phrases as your meta title is not a great approach in my opinion, as it doesn’t convey anything to the person viewing the link other than there is something on the page related to the keyword in question. Personally, I prefer to stick to one keyword phrase per title, so long as it is at least three words.

Meta descriptions are another area where a practical situation arises. The meta description appears below your title in the search results. It represents an opportunity to expand upon your title. Is it critical that you do this? Probably not, but every bit helps. More importantly, your description can be used to help your rankings. Personally, I always use the first two lines of text on the page as my meta description. Obviously, you want to have the keyword phrase you are optimizing for in that text, preferably twice. By taking this approach, you highlight the phrase for the search engines and provide the reader with a clue to what is on the page.

Meta tags in general have lost much of their allure when it comes to search engine optimization. While they are definitely no longer a critical element, they are still important.

Tip: Evaluate SEO companies by looking for search engine optimization testimonials from their clients.
